In an emergency call 000 first

Hobart Private 24/7 Emergency Department. Adults and children welcome. Get urgent medical care with or without private health insurance. Know the wait time.

As with all private emergency departments there are out-of-pocket costs associated with your treatment. At Hobart Private the out-of-pocket emergency department fee is $260. This fee needs to be paid on the day.

An additional $40 fee is charged for after-hours visits. After-hours include weeknights between 8pm and 7am, all-day weekends and public holidays.

Depending on your treatment, you may also incur other costs like radiology, pathology and specialist doctor consultation fees and a portion of these may be claimable under Medicare.

If you return to the ED within 7 days with the same condition, we’ll bulk bill the ED fee.

Whether you have private health insurance, WorkCover, Veteran’s Affairs or are uninsured, you can be assessed and treated at our emergency department.

Emergency Department fees are not covered by private health insurance as per Private Health Insurance Act 2007. Private health insurance covers patients once admitted into hospital.

International patients who don’t have a Medicare care card will pay a higher out-of-pocket presentation fee of $550 on the day. Any other out-of-pocket fees must be paid on the day.

Within minutes of your arrival, a nurse will assess you depending on the severity of your illness or injury. We generally have shorter wait times and you can check our ED wait times online. Our emergency doctor will see you in order of how urgent your medical condition is. They’ll assess you and decide on the best treatment; either admitted into hospital or you’re treated and sent home with a GP follow up. Our experienced team is here for you when you need them.

If you need treatment or surgery you may be admitted as an in-patient to Hobart Private Hospital.

81.0% of our patients rated their treatment and care at Hobart Private Emergency Department as very good (Jan-Dec 2020). We also achieved a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 79.0, in the same period. NPS scores between 70 and 100 are considered world-class.

The doctor services in our emergency department are supplied by a specialist emergency care provider which is a company independent of Healthscope (Tasmania) Pty Ltd and Hobart Private Hospital.
